The Japanese Totem Puzzle is a non-scroll challenge from Black & White, located on Land 4, above the shore where The Fish Puzzle is.
Guidelines[]
This puzzle is a mathematical challenge. Clicking on the signpost provides the player with some information. The objective is to have every totem fully up, moving a totem may affect other totems, however.
The totems can be fully down (how they are at the start), 1/4 up, halfway up, 3/4 up and fully up (as they are at the end), making it 5 possible positions total. The player can move totems up and down.
A fully raised totem, when affected by another totem that makes him raise one more space, will revert to the lowest position. (That is, a fully raised totem affected by a totem that makes him raise twice will be lowered to 1/4 height, and so on).
Assuming the player is facing the totems, the following is true:
- Totem #1 affects totems #2 (+4) and #6 (+2), and is affected by totem #3 (+1).
- Totem #2 affects no totems, and is affected by totems #1 (+4), #3 (+1) and 6# (+3).
- Totem #3 affects totems #1 (+1), #2 (+1) and #4 (+2), and is affected by totem #4 (+1).
- Totem #4 affects totem #3 (+1) and is affected by totems #3 (+2) and #6 (+1).
- Totem #5 affects totem #6 (+1) and is affected by no totems.
- Totem #6 affects totems #2 (+3) and #4 (+1) and is affected by totems #1(+2) and #5 (+1).
(The "+numbers" refers to the aforementioned five possible positions). With that in mind it is possible to see that if totem #5 is affected by no other totems, it must be fully risen first. and since totem #2 affects no totems, it should be risen last.
The Solution[]
- Fully raise totem #5;
- Raise totem #1 - 3 notches;
- Raise totem #3 - 1 notch;
- Lower totem #4 - 2 notches;
- Fully raise totem #6;
- Fully raise totem #2.
Reward: A spiritual shield miracle dispenser, just like the one next to the temple.
